The essence of Edinburgh Cashmere is to provide the highest quality yarn lovingly designed into luxurious cashmere collectables.

We would like to share with you a little of our garments history and where our cashmere originates from.

Cashmere scarves and sweaters are some of the most sought after garments in the fashion and textile industry.
Why? You may ask.
Simply because cashmere is considered to be the softest and most luxurious wool in existence. This yarn may be delicate; however, this fine and light fibre is three times warmer than sheep’s wool. It is also a natural fibre, meaning it’s biodegradable and decidedly better for the environment.

Cashmere production is said to have originally started around the 13th century in the Kashmir region; however, the leading producers to date are in Inner Mongolia and China.

Cashmere is made from the soft undercoat of the cashmere goat, the cashmere wool is collected during the spring moulting season when the goats naturally shed their winter coat. The pure cashmere is then washed, dyed and spun into yarn for knitwear or fabric for luxury scarfs, stoles and blankets.

To bring the garment cost down, cashmere can be blended with other wool fibres such as lambswool for elasticity, or silk to create a beautiful sheen. Silk and cashmere blend scarves and stoles are particularly popular over the summer months.
